110 Bench
Design by: Choi.Object Steel Workshop
Introduction
Based in Nha Trang, CHOI.OBJECT is a steel design and fabrication workshop founded by Huỳnh Việt Long. After graduating in Architecture from Van Lang University, Long decided to return to his family’s metal workshop to start his own project. Rather than pursuing a conventional office-based design career, he chose a path that combines architectural thinking with direct production practice. From the beginning, he has worked closely with craftsmen, transforming ideas and drawings into reality.

CHOI.OBJECT applies an architectural thinking approach “in reverse” – rather than focusing on the overall building, the workshop concentrates on production methods and each individual making process. The final product is seen as a “synthesis of thinking about the process of making.”
A clear example of this approach is BENCH 110, a design for Charmcafe in Melbourne. Using 3mm steel, the bench is cut into separate pieces and fully assembled with M6 bolts, without any welding. The result is a structure capable of supporting loads over 500 kg from steel only 3mm thick. Over two years, the workshop has produced 150 prototypes, serving multiple coffee brands as well as individual clients across Vietnam.
