Introduction

Nhabe Scholae is an architecture and research office based in Ho Chi Minh City, founded by architect Nguyễn Anh Cường. The studio’s name originates from the Greek noun “scholae” (σχολή), defined as a place of learning, contemplation, and creation, positioned beyond labor. The studio’s practice centers on learning and understanding. The focal theme in Nhabe Scholae’s projects and research is the concept of space along with its satellite imaginations, encompassing inseparable physical, biological, and cultural properties. The studio’s architectural creation process is described as reflective and “naïve,” aiming to question the characteristics of power, mainstream norms, and intrinsic authority within architectural works. These studies also address the fundamental aspects of architecture, including geometric abstraction, proportion, and political significance.
